So far, most of my clients have been individuals or families with needs such as troubleshooting Windows configurations or setting up wireless home networks.
Lyn/Mar Company is my first Small Business client. First contracted in November of 2003 to troubleshoot and repair some network printing issues, I quickly discovered that there were a few roots to their problems. All of their computers were on their last legs. Not only were they using old hardware, but the operating systems had never been updated and were about to deemed obsolete. I brought all systems up to their latest Service Pack level and performed various other maintenance tasks to temporarily allow them to work. I recommended replacing the entire system and discovered that the owner had pretty much already decided to replace all the computers, anyway.
Finding themselves short on office space, Lyn/Mar was already in the process of relocating to a building as soon the renovation was complete. They contracted me to install the network cabling and to design, order, and install a new computer network and transfer and convert all data from the old systems on move-in day.
After all the new hardware was ordered and the new office walls had been framed, I installed a patch panel and redundant network cabling (2 cable runs per computer at each outlet). Should one fail, the other may be used by changing a connection at the patch. When the new server arrived, I pre-configured as much as possible and waited for the renovation to be completed. The new offices were ready enough to install the server a couple weeks before move in, so I did. I also finished configuring it so it was completely functional and connected to the Internet.
During that couple weeks, I designed and uploaded their web site. It will be completed as soon as they finish updating what they want for new content. But since this is not a priority in their every day business, there is no rush to complete it.
The day before move-in day, I installed and configured all the client computers and did the data transfer and conversion. On move-in day, I was on location; training the staff and making sure that everything they needed to do business was fully functional. They are currently operating in a Microsoft Windows 2003 Small Business Server Active Directory domain using Windows XP Professional clients with Microsoft Office 2003 Standard.
My service to Lyn/Mar includes daily remote status, usage, and alert monitoring and administration as well as monthly maintenance of all systems for them.
